Research

Funded Projects And Consultancy

The School of Mechanical Engineering is the proud recipient of three FIST projects from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The first project was approved for the development of the Automotive Research Centre in 2003, with a budget of Rs. 0.57 crore. In 2011, the second project was approved for the establishment of the Centre for Advanced Manufacturing Research, with a total cost of Rs. 2.57 crore. The third project was granted in 2022 to establish a high-temperature fatigue testing machine.

The DST has awarded the School of Mechanical Engineering Rs. 20.0 crores under the "Promotion of University Research for Scientific Excellence (PURSE) scheme" to establish a Centre of Excellence in Additive Manufacturing in 2021. The Centre of Excellence houses all of the unique facilities for advanced material processing, testing, and characterization.

The School has strong potential in the broad areas of Additive Manufacturing, Autonomous Vehicles, Bio-Fuels, Composites and Nano-Composites, Control Systems, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Circular Economy, Engineering Design, Industrial Engineering, Industry 4.0 and 5.0, Joining Technologies, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Hybrid and Electric Vehicles, Hydrogen Storage, Materials Characterization, Machine Learning & IoT, Non-Destructive Testing, Noise, Vibrations, and Harshness (NVH), Product Design Engineering, Robotics and Automation, Sustainable Energy, Vehicle Dynamics

The school has received a total of 79 research projects with a total outlay of 52.53 Crores in the last 5 years from 2019. The funding is being provided by various agencies such as DST – SERB, DST- CRG, AR&DB, ISRO, DAE–BRNS, DRDO-NRB, GTRE, and MOES The school has also attracted international funding from the Royal Academy of Engineering, British Council, Swedish Council for higher education, DST-NAWA, DST-IC IMPACT Indo- Canada, Indo-Hungarian Joint Research Scheme, DST – UKIERI etc. in the last 5 years.

The school has a very competitive and healthy publishing culture. The number of Scopus indexed publications of the faculty members of the school in the year 2017 is 315.  One of the areas of focus of the School is on New Product Development and the generation of intellectual wealth. The faculty members of the school had filed over 12 National parents over the last 5 years. The list of patents filed include Eco Board, Rotating radiator for improved heat transfer in motor vehicles, Special Anode for Aluminium – Air batteries, Anodic Coating for Aluminium – Air batteries and Mobile Vehicle Garage.

Dr. Sakthivadivel Best Chapter Newsletter - VIT Students Chapter of the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) led by Dr. Sakthivadivel has won the International Division: extending its wining run by being one of the renowed AEE Student chapters worldwide.
Dr. B. Ashok Dr. B. Ashok has sucessfully completed the post - doctoral fellowship at the Biofiels Engines and Emission Research Group, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria. He worked on the thesis titled "Calibration Pedagogy for Vehicle Powertrain System and Consumer Perception towards Future Electric Mobility"for receiving this post doctoral fellowship.

Dr. Gunji Bala Murali Dr. Gunji Bala Murali has received the "Distinguished Paper Award at the IPDIMS - 2022 conference held at NIT Rourkela on 25 and 26 November 2022.
Dr. S. Vijayalakshmi Dr. S. Vijayalakshmi has been awarded the NAWA Ulam fellowship by the Polish National Agency forAcademic Exchange (Ref.No.BPN/ULM/2022/1/00123). The maximum amount of fellowship is PLN 94000. This fellowship will enable Dr. S. Vijayalakshmi to carry out collaborative research in the field of biofuel at the Gdansk University of Technology in Poland for a period of six months.

Dr. Bibin john Dr. Bibin john has been awarded the NAWA Ulam fellowship by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange. The maximum amount of fellowship is PLN 104000. Through this fellowship Dr. Bibin will be carrying out collaborative research in the field of aerodynamics at the Lublin University of Technology in Poland for a period of six months.
