ICBRAMR ’19 organized by the School of Biosciences and Technology, VIT, Vellore aims to bring together Indian and International communities (scientists, students and postdocs) from academia, national laboratories, industries and other organizations working in the field of antimicrobial resistance and phage therapy. The conference covers broad research theme in the area to accommodate wide range of participants to facilitate collaborations (both national and international). Interest in the applications of bacteriophages for the treatment of multidrug resistance pathogens is on the rise and this conference will be a right platform to bring in experts and researchers across the globe to discuss the current and future prospects of phage therapy in India. Many senior experts, researchers, will be delivering special lectures, invited talks, presentations and posters at ICBRAMR ‘19.
Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) was founded in 1984 as Vellore Engineering College by the Chancellor Dr. G. Viswanathan. VIT attracts students from all the states of India and more than 53+ countries because of its academic excellence. More than 250 MoUs with top ranked universities across the globe have been signed. VIT Ranked No.1 Private Institution for Innovation (ARIIA 2019 Award) by Govt. of India. VIT has introduced many innovations in academic processes which adds value to every student. FFCS (Fully Flexible Credit System), PBL (Project Based Learning) for better learning, fully digitized academic portals that assists students in equipping themselves for 2020 market place, Hackathons / Makeathons as part of curriculum exercise which kindles the interest and the curiosity of students, which moulds them to be better problem solvers, 8th module in every subject being handled by industry experts, making the students contextualize the concepts they study in the classroom, are a few of the innovations that VIT has introduced.
School of Bio Sciences and Technology (SBST) offers programs in various disciplines such as B.Tech. & M.Tech. Biotechnology, M.Sc. in Applied Microbiology, Biotechnology, Biomedical Genetics, M.Sc. Biotechnology (5 years Intg.) and Ph.D. The school houses excellent infrastructure and well trained faculty members which makes it to be one among the largest populations of trained biologists in our country. Most of them have pursued postdoctoral training from laboratories in developed countries. The competencies of the faculty in research are endorsed by the quality of research papers (Thomson Reuters Publications) and obtaining research projects (43 projects are currently funded by National & International agencies and 90 projects are completed). These component makes SBST listed amongst the top schools of Modern Biology in India.
The society strives to work together to explore the applications of bacteriophages, especially in the context of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and establish them as a viable option for treating drug-resistant infections. By bringing together scientists academicians and clinicians conducting basic and translational research on bacteriophages, we aim to leverage the collective expertise and resources at the national level. Members of the society research on diverse aspects of bacteriophages such as prevalence of phages in rivers; water and sewage treatment, clinical application of phages including their role as antibacterial agents, vaccines, in gene therapy, diagnostics, drug delivery, cancer therapy; animal husbandry, poultry, food safety, aquaculture, agriculture, industry etc. Given the slow pace of drug discovery for infectious diseases and the wide spread occurrence of AMR, it is about time that a concerted effort is made towards understanding the challenges of bacteriophages as therapeutics.
