In recent years, Virtual and Augmented Reality has entered into almost all sectors and elevated the sophistication to a whole new level. VR/AR has changed the face of interaction and redefined the ways we humans interact with machines.
In the field of education, in particular, VR/AR has brought us a platform where anything is possible. We could now enjoy the true power of experimental learning. All nuances of engineering, medical sciences are now just a simulation away! Not only that, but VR/AR also been proven to increase students’ engagement and motivation levels.
VR/AR-powered education is a boon to visual learners and often acts as an effective alternative to traditional learning methods. Due to the rapid development in the smartphone technology and Internet connection speeds, VR/AR assisted learning has become more reachable and thus trending in the learning sector.
Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) was established in the year 1984 as Vellore Engineering College by the Chancellor Dr. G. Viswanathan at Vellore. From its humble beginning, the Institution has grown exponentially to that of having more than 33,000 students at present. Students from all the states of India and from more than 50 countries are studying at VIT. In recognition of its excellence in academics, and research, the University status was conferred in the year 2001 by MHRD, Govt. of India. VIT has retained No.1 position among the private Engineering Institutions in India for the third year in a row. VIT is the first University in India to get 4 - STAR rating from QS, the International ranking agency. ISO Certification from Holland, International accreditation from the United Kingdom and the USA, and the highest accreditation grade from the Government of India reflect the University’s excellence in all fronts.
VIT School of Design (V-SIGN) is one of the newest schools in VIT, Vellore. It offers M.Des and B.Des programs in the branch of Industrial Design and B.Sc Multimedia & Animation. It offers one of the best facilities for design research, consultancy, training and growth for faculty members. We have faculty members who are highly qualified from institutes like IIT Bombay, IIT Guwahati, IISc Bangalore and NIT Tiruchirapalli. Over 150 years of combined industry experience of our faculty members from reputed companies in India and abroad add value to our design programs.
Department of Multimedia, VIT offers two three-year undergraduate programs of B.Sc (Multimedia & Animation) and B.Sc. (Visual Communication). The course provides essential technical and creative skills for every student to unleash their talents on different elements of multimedia and Visual communication. The teaching and delivery of the course is through high-level, faculty- guided studio practice, and actively promotes experimentation, reflection and the sharing of enthusiasm and influences. All aspects of the course are assessed through project work and offer a range of methods including critical analysis, submitted work, project plans, and professional portfolio development. To make further inroads in terms of collaborative participation in research and teaching, Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) have been signed with Guangdong University of Technology, China.
The VIT School of Design (V-SIGN) at Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore, India – welcomes the submission of papers to this virtual conference with pride.
For over a decade, educational researchers and practitioners have been exploring how innovative means could be integrated into traditional learning to enrich the learning experience and enhance learning effectiveness. Enabled by these innovative means, brand new learning environments can be created to better support teaching and learning activities in different subject disciplines at different levels, for example – Education environments powered by VR/AR. They emphasize learning flexibility, effectiveness, efficiency, engagement, and reflectiveness, where both formal and informal learning is integrated. It is believed that learning experience can be enriched and that learning effectiveness can be enhanced, through the adaptation of individual learning traits and preferences, increased degree of engagement, timely feedback and guidance, and provision of media-rich contents. Along with the advent of mobile and smart devices, the learning environments would operate on huge heterogeneous network infrastructures that provide augmented experiences that can mobilize learning activities, encourage interactive collaborations through social media, and at the same time facilitate the collection of learning-related data for analytic purposes. All these are actively investigated by educational researchers and practitioners in the field.
This call intends to disseminate the latest research findings and share good practices on future learning environments, from both pedagogical and technological perspectives.
