Topics for Mathathon

Weather Forecasting

Meteorologists use basic mathematical computations like statistics, geometry and calculus. There is an extensive usage of partial derivatives that help determining difference in wind velocity when blowing unidirectionally or determining the gradient and curl of the field and even how is its increment after you go a certain distance in that direction.

Page Rank Algorithm

Page rank algorithm extends classical information retrieval techniques such as boolean searching and vector space models with link-based ranking methods. Analyse the PageRank algorithm and its numerical and spectral properties.

Car and Plane Design

The Navier–Stokes equations are the system of non-linear partial differential equations governing the motion of a Newtonian fluid, which may be liquid or gas. This is essential in designing automobiles and predicting drag, momentum, viscosity and optimizing it for efficiency. Computational geometry, numerical linear algebra and basic algebra play a huge role in designing the automobile and making efficient designs.

Health and Fitness

Fitness measurements such as calculating body fat index, BMI, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) are fed into mathematical equations to understand nutritional labels, caloric intake, set dietary parameters. Progress is analysed using statistics.

Cryptography

Cryptography builds from the field of pure maths known as Number theory which deals with integers. The math behind the encryption require much more computational power than is currently available.

Image Processing

Maths plays an important role in image processing. Linear algebra is used to model colour clash, eigenvalues & eigenvectors are used for image and colour correction; while concepts of probability & Fourier transforms are used for image conversion and edge detection.

Map Projections

Mathematics plays a huge role in this by giving exact coordinates of a map projections. An advanced understanding of the concepts of calculus, symmetry, geometry, trigonometry is essential for a cartologist to depict a 3D surface on a flat map.

Genome Application

Numerical analysis, statistical modelling play a significant role in mapping and sequencing our DNA -- the blueprint for the genetic information that determines what makes each of us unique. Researchers mark the new era of molecular medicine, when the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease will be individual-specific and thus more successful.

Math for Architecture

Mathematics and architecture are intertwined, starting from where it is the basis of building structures to define the spatial form of a building. The Pythagorean Theorem is used extensively in designing and building structures, especially roofs.

Trading strategy to assess stocks

Professional traders prefer technical analysis, which involves applying mathematical formulas to the price of an asset to evaluate current and future price changes.

Rounds Description

Round 1

The event will be started by an introductory session in which participants will be informed about all the rules and regulations of Math-a-Thon. The session will be followed by an quiz (team quiz) which will have approximately 50 questions per team which they will have to solve in thirty minutes. Based on the constraints decided, 40% of the teams will qualify for the next round. (View Syllabus)

Round 2

In this round, each team will get 5 minutes to pitch their ideas and present it in front of the judges in the form of PowerPoint presentation. Judging criteria will have the following points:

  • - Novelty of the idea
  • - Abstract
  • - Feasibility of the idea

Based on the judging criteria top 20% of the remaining teams will qualify for the next round.

Round 3

This round will be the final round of the event, where every team will be given 10 minutes to present their fully working prototype in front of the judges. Based on the idea and implementation of the idea judges will select top 3 teams.
