Conference Theme

Traditional manufacturing and service operations objective is to achieve excellence in mass production and service operations without any wastage with the known certain conditions. However, in the Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous (VUCA) world, manufacturing and service operations need to proactively sense the changes either a short term such as earthquake or long-term disruption such as pandemic and adapt quickly to varying conditions to offer the same productivity. There are several theories, tools and techniques to achieve excellence in certain conditions but in the VUCA world, those conditions will not apply. Hence, there is a need for research on combining people, process and technologies to deal with short and long-term disruptions and develop contingency plans to make the manufacturing and service operations robust. In addition to productivity these days, the firms and its supply network need to achieve several sustainable goals. There is a potential for researchers to investigate the pathways for ensuring resilience through application of digital technologies such as methods to ensure as blockchain, 3D printing, artificial intelligence, digital twins, big data analytics, augmented reality, cyber-physical systems to enhance people and process. The conference theme invites original research papers to address a few open research questions generated through chatGPT for example as given below.

  • How can organizations use digital technologies to build more resilient supply chains?
  • How can organizations use digital technologies to improve the resilience of their service operations and respond more effectively to changes in demand or disruptions in the market?
  • What changes need to be included in processes to increase the flexibility of manufacturing/ service operations and reduce their vulnerability to disruptions?
  • How can organizations ensure the readiness and adaptability of their workforce in the face of disruptive events and changes in the market?
  • What role can artificial intelligence and machine learning play in improving the resilience of manufacturing operations?
  • How can organizations use data analytics to proactively identify potential supply chain disruptions and minimize their impact?
  • How can organizations develop and implement effective business continuity plans for their manufacturing operations?
  • How can sustainability be integrated into the design and operation of resilient manufacturing systems to minimize their impact on the environment and ensure their long-term viability?
  • How can organizations build resilient service operations that are capable of providing high-quality service to customers, even in the face of disruptions or changes in the market?

The conference proceeding includes research debates on the nascent research questions as mentioned above and includes new contributions from the industrial and systems engineering research community. We expect submission from the scholars in the following overlapping areas including manufacturing, supply chain digitalization, resilience, and sustainability.

Topics covering industrial issues/applications and academic research include, but are not limited to:

Submission
