DNA DAY
Deoxyribonucleic acid alternatively known as DNA. It is the fundamental building block of the human race and practically all other species. It is the molecule that all living things use to carry genetic instructions.
And because DNA is so important, it deserves its own day! So, get ready to discover and celebrate National DNA Day!
- About National DNA day
2023 marks the 201st year of Gregor Mendel's birthday. Acknowledged as the Father of Genetics, Mendel's studies on the pea plant paved way for experiments that could shape the future of genetics and thereby leading to the discovery of DNA and its structure. April 25, 1953, witnessed a breakthrough in the history of genetics as the article on double helical structure of DNA was published in Nature by Francis Crick and James Watson along with Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin. Consequently, Watson and Crick jointly won the Nobel prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1962. In addition, early of April 2003, marked the completion of Human Genome Project, which helped to decrypt the blueprint and genetic makeup of an individual. These discoveries were steppingstones to understand the genetic bases of infections, their mode of transmission, control and treatment. To honour the occasion of 'World DNA Day', the students of MSc. Biomedical Genetics are organizing the 10th National DNA Day, 2023, on the 7th and 8th October 2023. This year's theme is Personalised Medicine, as it illuminates a future where healthcare is as unique as your DNA, tailoring treatments to your individual genetic blueprint for a truly customised path to well being.
Why DNA Day is Important?
-
A. It is to acknowledge the advancements in scientific discovery.
Scientists have been studying living organisms and contributing to genetic discoveries from the days of Aristotle, the Father of Biology, which were published in 1953 and are still ongoing now. On National DNA Day, we honour the work that contributed to the knowledge we have today, as well as the ongoing research that will lead to tomorrow's discoveries.
-
B. It promotes people to learn more about their genetic makeup and history.
The science that has led to the commemoration of National DNA Day is the science that connects us to our ancestors. This day contributes to our sense of belonging by motivating us to discover more about who we are and where we came from.
-
C. It makes easy for the public to read and learn about genetics and genomics
There's a lot to learn about the structure and function of genomes, from genetic history to gene editing. On National DNA Day, the public is encouraged to learn as much as they can about their genetic composition and the molecular biology of all living things.
