Awareness on preventing girl child sexual abuse

A poster exhibition to create awareness to prevent sexual abuse of girl children was held at Vellore Institute of Technology. Founder and Chancellor of VIT, Dr. G.Viswanathan inaugurated the event.

The posters which had slogans calling for putting an end to sexual abuse and other forms of violence on girl children, were created by women and men students of VIT. Dr. Viswanathan also handed over cash prizes to the best posters designed by the students.

The event was organised at a time when incidents of violence, especially sexual abuse on women, particularly girl children are on the rise in the country. Beautifully designed posters carrying the messages were displayed in the exhibition. A total of 5,973 posters were created by the students and 1,140 posters have been kept on display at Foodys. The exhibition is being organised by the School of BioSciences and Technology and School of Social Sciences and Languages.

Dr. Viswanathan handed over cash prizes to 10 students for the best posters designed by the students. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Viswanathan said that to give a forum for students to demonstrate their talent, the VIT administration organised such poster designing contests twice a year. He said that plans were also in place to conduct similar contests on topics like water conservation, suicide prevention, animal protection and awareness on the ills of corruption.

M.Kothandam, Dean of School of BioSciences and Technology and G.Velmurugan, Dean of School of Social Sciences and Languages, were also present on the occasion.
