Project Description

The research goal of this project is to investigate many body system dynamics with long range interactions and utilize it to the understanding of cooling mechanism and mass spectrometry aspects of the trapped ions in an EIBT using a particle-in-cell (PIC) numerical techniques. The trapped ions behavior in the EIBT is strongly influenced by the space charge interactions and the potentials on the mirror electrodes.

The current project will investigate the impact of space charge interactions on the reduction in the energy/velocity spread of ions trapped in an EIBT and will provide a theoretical foundation for cooling method, that could be further extended to other storage and trapping devices. Further we want to extend our work to trap two or more ions of different masses for studying the mass resolution and coalescence of nearby masses in the self-bunching mode of the trap. The role of space charge interactions for greater numbers of ions is inevitable and hence will be investigated thoroughly to understand its effect on the peak coalescence.
