Project Description

MXenes are a broader class of 2D transition metal carbides, nitrides or carbonitrides with a general formula, Mn+1XnTx, where M is an early transition metal, X is carbon and/or nitrogen and T is the surface functional groups such as O, OH, F, etc. MXenes possess large surface area and impressive conductivity, owing to which they are regarded as favorite materials in the development of SCs. Notably, the exhibit very good synthetic versatility and the surface of MXene could be easily functionalized and thus can be tailor-made for specific applications. Several investigations were made towards exploring the potential of MXenes in SC fabrication, however, to the best of our knowledge, there has been no report on the redox functionalized MXenes so far. Functionalization of MXenes with rationally chosen redox moieties would dramatically enhance the specific capacitance and would result in SC devices with high energy density. In this proposal, we intend to synthesize Ti and V based MXenes, a promising class of MXenes with high mechanical strength and to employ them as electrode materials.
