Project Description

Patients suffering from tissue loss, burns, organ failures are enormous in number. For example, every year more than a million injuries happen because of burns. Deaths from burning are more common among women than men and are a well-known means of female suicide or homicide. The approach of this proposal is to design novel biomimetic 3D scaffolds, which would facilitate cell growth in porous biomaterials and positive findings can be taken forward for wound healing and skin grafting.

Biomaterials have shown supremacy in tissue repair and regeneration as they have demonstrated comparatively high compatibility with the native extracellular matrix (ECM). Therefore, biomaterial-based 3D scaffolds for skin regeneration will be designed to have various attributes including biocompatibility and good biodegradability, excellent mechanical properties, adjusted porosities, and morphologies for transportation of cells, gases, metabolites, nutrients, and signal molecules both within the scaffold and into the scaffold from the local environment.
