Project Description

Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) are the new type of functional materials due to its intrinsic properties shape memory effect (SME) and superelasticity (SE), have been progressively used in various engineering fields medical, aerospace, electronics and state of arts applications like sensors actuators. The joining of SMAs is always challenging due to the degraded the material properties in fusion zone and heat affected zone (HAZ), changes in microstructures and chemical composition of material, induced residual stresses in weld fusion zone and HAZ. The sharp thermal gradients exist during the welding leads to the formation of residual stresses. These induced residual stresses in welds are inevitable, and can be minimized either through pre heat or post weld heat treatment. The project work is aimed to investigate the effect of residual stresses on the super elasticity and shape memory effect of SMA welds. Moreover, the work will also cover the estimation and minimization of residual stresses in shape memory alloy welds.
