Landslides in Nilgiris

Project Description

Landslides are one of the frequent natural hazards in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, particularly during monsoon season. Heavy rains triggered a series of landslides in Ooty, Coonoor and Kotagiri regions of The Nilgiris in November 2009 and 42 people lost their lives. The main objective of the project is to develop an effective, efficient and implementable Early Warning System (EWS) for the landslides in Nilgiris. EWS includes real time monitoring of slope with sensors such as extensometers, inclinometers, piezometers, strain gauges, accelerometers and rainfall data. Based on the threshold values and analysis of data, suitable early warning information will be provided to government officials.
