FOREWORD FROM THE HONOURABLE CHANCELLOR
Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), established initially as Vellore
Engineering College in the year 1984, has developed into Deemed to
be University in the year 2001 by following strategic plans
periodically for about four decades now. During this journey of 40
years, VIT is on two campuses. Vellore is the main campus, and
Chennai is the off-campus. Through academic, research, community
related experiential strengths, VIT has evolved as a top-tier university
in India through accreditations and rankings, both nationally and
internationally. VIT is reaccredited by NAAC at A++ Grade with a
CGPA of 3.66; VIT has been ranked by MHRD NIRF Ranking, Govt.
th
of India 2024 –10 rank in the University category; Shanghai
Ranking: 501- 600 (2024); Times Higher Education: 601 – 800 (2025); QS World University Ranking:
791 – 800 (2025).
th
VIT, as a quality-leading University with an NIRF-10 rank in the country, conceived and evolved the
UGC-specified ‘Institutional Development Plan’ (IDP) through a rigorous bottom-up exercise
involving enabler-based 14 committees with 37 expert members and a 5 member IDP Editorial Sub-
committee drawn from both Vellore and Chennai campuses. Outcome-based consultations were held
with the stakeholders and Industry leaders. The draft IDP edited and made into a document was then
approved by the Pro-Vice Chancellors and Vice-Chancellor of VIT. It will be placed in the ensuing
Executive Council meeting for its approval.
The essence of institutional development for VIT is embodied in a strategic framework designed to
advance excellence, inclusivity, and innovation across all facets of the educational landscape, in
alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) and all applicable regulatory requirements. This
comprehensive and practical approach seeks to guide VIT in the transformation of the Institution of
Eminence, where every member of the educational community can flourish.
This framework is not merely a set of guidelines but a 15-year blueprint for VIT’s intent on embedding
excellence into their institutional DNA. It positions Academic and Research Excellence and depth with
width as cornerstones of an exemplary educational experience, aligning with the aspirations of Global
Higher Education to cultivate a new generation of enlightened youth equipped to navigate, thrive in
and celebrate the diversity of the global educational village.
I am fully impressed with the compressive nature of this IDP document and appreciate the extensive
work carried out by the IDP committee. I am delighted to provide this FOREWORD message with full
satisfaction.
Dr.G.Viswanathan
Chancellor, VIT
