The conference will be hosted by Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Vellore on the theme “The Crises of the 21stCentury and the Way Forward” from 28th to 30th December, 2023. The conference will attract delegates including renowned Sociologists, Professors, Students, Researchers, and Academicians having expertise in the field of Sociology that would help the participants to enrich their knowledge and develop their understanding towards sociology. The Crises of The 21st Century and The Way Forward

The advent of the 21st century is accompanied by new forms of crises across the globe and in India. There are instances of escalating geo-political issues, conflicts, wars and violence, environmental degradation, climate change, natural disasters, health calamities like the Covid-19 Pandemic, and increasing poverty, inequality, and unemployment. The emergence of new power equations and consolidation of boundaries have perpetuated caste, class, gender, ethnic, religious, and regional schisms producing forms of antagonisms, increasing social inequalities, marginalities, and uncertainties. These crises call for various alternative mechanisms and forms of development and governance including formulation of related policies and planning to meet the current and future challenges.

A number of armed conflicts are going on in the world in the form of major and minor wars, and clashes, along with various forms of violence. The northwest border of India continues to face many such military standoffs, skirmishes, artillery duels, cross-border firing, and terrorism. Within the country too, there are instances of caste, communal, ethnic, and gender violence. Natural disasters in various parts of India, often 'man-made' have resulted in 'manufactured risks' resulting in cloud bursts, floods, cyclones, famines, and earthquakes that have rendered many people dead and homeless. Much of it is related to environmental issues like climate change, pollution, ecological imbalance, and resource depletion resulting in varied problems from food and water shortage and loss of biodiversity to waste management. Many conferences and summits have been held on these issues and organizations and movements have been launched.

The 21st century recently saw the worst health disaster in the form of Covid 19 pandemic which began in India in early 2020 from Kerala and gradually spread to the whole country. The Government of India imposed a lockdown immediately in March 2020 to limit the transmission of the virus. The lockdown affected the livelihood of many, especially labourers, migrants, workers, the poor, and those doing small and menial jobs. The second wave that began in March 2021 in India lasted till the end of the year was much more devastating than the first with the coming of a new deadly and highly transmissible variant, the Delta. On 30 April (2021), India became the first country to report over 400,000 new cases in a 24-hour period and over 3,500 deaths in one day. As of December 2022, India had the second-highest number of confirmed cases in the world (after the USA) with 44.68 million reported cases of COVID-19 infection, and the third-highest number of COVID-19 deaths (after the US and Brazil) at 530,698. Various ways of physical and social distancing, quarantine methods, and the use of masks, sanitizers, and vaccines created the 'new normal'.

What are the major crises of the 21st century in India₹ How do social scientists and sociologists in particular understand and analyse these crises₹ What steps are required to be undertaken to mitigate these predicaments, and what is the way forward₹ These are some of the questions to be examined, discussed, and deliberated upon in different Plenary and technical sessions during the 48th All India Sociological Conference (AISC) to be held at the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Vellore, Tamil Nadu from 28thto 30th December 2023. The Indian Sociological Society (ISS) welcomes the delegates to the conference!

3. Meeting Crises Issues of Development and Governance in Tamil Nadu

Paper Presentations

Research papers are invited in English and Hindi to be presented during technical sessions of 28 Research Committees (RCs) and Adhoc Group 01 of the Indian Sociological Society. The papers are to be prepared in consonance with the main theme of the conference.

Young Researcher's Workshop

The young researcher's workshop will be organized by the Indian Sociological Society (ISS) in collaboration with Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Vellore on 26th-27th December 2023 on the theme “Writing and Publishing Research Papers" at VIT, Vellore. The ISS will invite applications from the researchers and doctoral students through a separate notification to participate in the workshop.

Abstract Submission

Abstracts will be selected on the basis of the following criteria:

  • Relation of the topic to the theme of the conference
  • Sociological relevance of the topic
  • Conceptual clarity and methodological application

Abstract must follow the following format

  • Title, brief introduction, objectives, significance/relevance
  • Methodology
  • Major findings/thesis/argument
  • Between 200-250 words
  • For English- Times New Roman, 12 pt., PDF format
  • For Hindi- Kruti Dev, 10 pt
  • The specifications for the font and format should be strictly adhered to, otherwise it will not be considered.
  • Last Date for Submission - 31st October 2023

Full Paper must follow the following format

  • Full paper must be submitted only in English
  • Word Limit - 2500 to 3000 words including reference
  • Times New Roman, 12 pt., 1.5 line spacing

About Tamilnadu

Tamilnadu, the 'Land of temples', is situated on the coromandel coast in the south-eastern part of Indian peninsular. It is naturally divided between the flat regions on the east coast and the hilly areas in the north and west. Some of the major spots of tourist attraction are Chennai, Mamallapuram, Kancheepuram, Kumbakonam, Dharasuram, Chidambaram, Thiruvannamalai, Srirangam, Madurai, Rameswaram, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, Thanjavur, Velankanni, Nagoor, Kazhugumalai, Courtallam, Hogenakkal, Papanasam, Ooty, Kodaikannal, Yercaud, Elagiri, Kolli hills, Mudumalai, Annamalai, Mundanthurai, Kalakad, Vedanthangal and Point Calimere. The state is thus a melting pot of culture and heritage along with its natural beauty.

About Vellore

Vellore 'the city of spears' is located on the banks of the river Palar in Tamilnadu with its bright blue sky, the hillocks and the blazing sun. The city surrounded by hills and facing the lovely sundown puts on a purple tinge like a heather bloom to greet us with tropical temperature. The city traces its historical significance from medieval to post independent India. It has served as a seat for the Pallavas, Cholas, Nayakas, Marathas, Arcot Nawabs and the Bijapur Sultan kingdoms during the medieval ages. It has witnessed the massacre of European soldiers during the mutiny of 1806 which sowed the seeds for the Indian freedom struggle. Later during the 18thcentury, the city witnessed many decisive battles between the English and the French in Ambur (1749 AD), Arcot (1751 AD) and Vandavasi (1768 AD) respectively. During 1760 the fort was occupied by the British and used as a military garrison. Vellore fort is one of the most perfect specimens of military architecture in South India. Even today the monuments in the city give a vivid picture of the town through the ages. One such is the Vellore fort encompassing stone inscriptions, temple, Tippumahal, Begum Mahal, Kandimahal, mosque and church inside the premises of the fort that stand strong till date as an example for the blend of both religion and secularism. The temple inside the fort is a fine example of Vijayanagar architecture devoted to Lord Shiva (Jalakandeswarar). The kalyanamantap on the left of the entrance with intricate carvings and delicacy of execution bears testimony to the engineering marvel and advanced state of sculpture of the times.
Another major attraction of the city is the Sripuram Golden temple which is located on 100 acres of land constructed by a Vellore-based charity trust named Sri NarayaniPeedam. The temple is known for its intricate art work which is covered with 1500 kg of gold in 9 to 10 layers depicting details from the Vedas. Further, the south end of the city consists of the panoramic Amirthi forests known for its rich diverse flora and fauna. Today the forest is converted into a wildlife sanctuary and a seasonal waterfall.

About Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore

About Department of Social Sciences, SSL, VIT, Vellore

The Department of Social Sciences was established at VIT in 2009 under School of Social Sciences and Languages, to enhance the knowledge, impart necessary skills and develop attitudes of the future citizens. The department offers Postgraduate programme in MSW, Minors in Economics, Finance and Ph.D. programmes in Sociology, Social Work, Psychology, Economics, History, and International Relations. The department also offers courses on Social Sciences for UG programmes of both engineering and non-engineering disciplines to enable the learners to avail opportunities across the globe. The campus is located on a 370 acres site on the Ranipet-Katpadi road which is 2 hours and 30 minutes of drive from Chennai and 4 hours from Bangalore by road. Both the cities are well connected by road, rail, and air routes with all parts of the country and have international airports.The National Highways passing through Vellore are NH 46 (Bangalore-Chennai Road), NH 234 (Mangalore to Viluppuram) and NH 4 from Ranipet to Chennai and the Cuddalore - Chittoor. The nearest international airport is Chennai Airport 135 km away from Vellore. From the airport, you can go to the bus stand at Koyambedu (CMBT) or the Central Railway station to take a bus or train to Vellore. Train and bus services to Vellore are frequent, cheap and quite satisfactory. Either of the journey takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes.
If you choose to travel by train, you should buy your ticket to Katpadi railway station which is just 3 kms away from VIT. After arriving at Chennai International Airport or Kempegowda International Airport (Bangalore) you can either take a taxi, local or metro train to Purtachithalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachadran Central railway station (which is about 20 kms away from Chennai airport) or KSR Bangalore railway station (which is about 33 kms away from the Bangalore airport) respectively. All west- bound trains from Chennai and Bangalore go via Katpadi junction railway station to several destinations such as Coimbatore, Trivandrum, Bangalore, Chennai, etc. For more details about train schedules from Chennai to Katpadi or Bangalore to Katpadi you can visit the website https://www.irctc.co.in
If you choose to travel by bus, you should reach Koyambedu (CMBT) Bus stand from Chennai airport and Majestic Bus stand from Bangalore airport. Buses from the respective bus stand will directly bring you right to the centre of the town of Vellore from where you can reach by auto rickshaws to VIT which is about 5 km from the bus stand. You could also hire auto rickshaws to reach VIT. Further, VIT transportation facilities will be exclusively made available from morning to evening from Railway station and Bus stand to the campus on request basis.



Important Points To Be Noted

  • ISS & RC Membership are mandatory for paper presentations. Payments towards ISS Membership should be made to the ISS account only (Punjab National Bank)
  • Registration fee for the conference, including spot registration, should be paid directly to the conference account through the portal.
  • Abstracts should be submitted in the prescribed format before the deadline i.e. 31st October 2023
  • Abstracts in Hindi should be sent in KrutiDev 10 pt., otherwise it cannot be included in the book of abstracts.
  • Abstracts for paper presentations should be sent directly to the respective RC Convenors with the details such as Conference registration number, ISS membership number and RC Membership number/payment details before abstract submission deadline.
  • Accommodation will be provided only for those who have registered in the category “Registration with Accommodation” from 27th December 2023 evening to 31st December 2023 morning.
  • After the submission of the online registration form in the ISS website portal, if you do not get a confirmation in three days, you may please contact the Organizing Secretary in the email: aisc48th@vit.ac.in
