Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), founded in 1984 as Vellore Engineering College by Chancellor Dr G. Viswanathan, has gained recognition for its academic excellence, attracting students from across India and over 53 countries. VIT has signed over 500 MoUs with top-ranked universities across the globe, further solidifying its international standing. The MHRD-NIRF Ranking 2024 has recognised VIT's remarkable achievements, ranking it 13th in Research, 11th in the Engineering Category, 10th in the University Category, and 19th in the Overall Category
VIT has implemented several innovative academic processes designed to enhance the educational experience of its students. The Fully Flexible Credit System (FFCS), Project- Based Learning (PBL), and fully digitized academic portals empower students to prepare effectively for the evolving job market of 2025. The curriculum also includes Hack-a-thons and Make- a-thons, which kindle students' interest and curiosity, thereby developing their problem-solving skills.
The School of Bio Sciences and Technology (SBST), headed by the Dean, Dr. Suneetha V, was founded in 2001 at VIT Vellore, and comprises of four departments: Biotechnology, Integrative Biology, Bio-sciences, and Biomedical Sciences. SBST offers one of the highest concentrations of skilled biologists in the country, owing to its 40 research facilities and 16 teaching labs, as well as its cutting-edge infrastructure and highly trained faculty.
The School provides one undergraduate (B.Tech in Biotechnology), four postgraduate (M.Sc. and M. Tech.) programs and two integrated M.Sc. programs (Biotechnology and Food Sciences and Technology). It additionally offers an integrated Ph.D. and a Ph.D. for external and internal students. Furthermore, SBST is composed of two key centers: the Centre for Bio Separation Technology (CBST) and the Centre for Nanobiotechnology (CNBT), all of which have devoted faculty members who are eager to inspire students. The other significant priorities include developing entrepreneurship skills and grooming students to become future scientists for the improvement of humanity. Collaboration with National and International Universities, as well as multinational corporations, helps us achieve more.
SBE-VIT is an international biotechnology chapter that serves as a platform for students to explore their passion for interdisciplinary fields and contribute to their advancement. It organizes numerous make-a- thons, debates, and lectures for the students to engage in various activities. The organization is committed to promoting excellence in biological engineering. Collaboration and teamwork are two of the essential aspects of the chapter’s functioning. The main objective of this chapter is to include biotechnology in all aspects of engineering. The chapter also focuses on community outreach and social initiatives. Throughout its diverse range of activities and initiatives, it empowers students to develop their technical skills and cultivate a passion for research.
SBE-VIT and the School of Biosciences and Technology (SBST) present the 10th edition of our flagship event and our 4th national event, Bioinspired Design Fest (BIDFest). BIDFest has consistently been an event committed to recognizing the complexities of the living world and offering effective and sustainable solutions to global engineering challenges. This year, our goal is to provide participants with an exceptional learning experience by delving into nature's complex and awe-inspiring designs during our 45- hour event. Following thought- provoking lectures and pre-event IoT and design workshops, participants will delve into an exciting line up of events where they will have the chance to create original solutions to contemporary issues. They need to provide a 3D model or prototype that illustrates their idea. Get ready for an unforgettable experience at BIDFest 2025!
The Guest Speaker Workshop at BIDFest 2025 features biomimicry and bioinspired design experts, providing valuable insights and opportunities to enhance problem-solving and design skills.
Participants will be tasked to create a basic outline of their model and product as a e-poster.

BIDFest has proven to be one of the best innovative, mindful and engaging ideathon I've ever been a part of. As an aspiring engineer and a biologist this provided me with the perfect platform to display my entrepreneurship skills, creativity and knowledge. Not only was it fun but also made all participants think out of the box and come up with groundbreaking solutions to moderns real world problems.
BIDFest focused on Bio-inspired Design, I had a fantastic learning experience filled both with knowledge and fun. Exploring innovative ideas in the realm of biology, I gained valuable insights into bio-inspired design principles. The event provided a unique platform to collaborate with like minded individuals, fostering creativity and expanding my understanding of sustainable and nature inspired solutions in product design. Overall, it was an enriching experience that broadened my perspective an enhanced my appreciation for bio-inspired design approaches in creating functional and ecofriendly designs.
I had an incredible time at BIDFest! Engaging in friendly competition with my peers and coursemates, we tackled intriguing problem statements in the biotechnology field, developing innovative models. Fortuitously, I collaborated with my team on a farm water organophosphate filtration system inspired by clam and whale balleen. The experience was exceptional, highlighted by a comprehensive hackathon hosted by SBST and SBE, making the 3 days immensely enjoyable.
My experience at BIDFest was enlightening and fun where I got to learn about the various aspects of design and integrate them with biological inspirations. And yes, winning made the experience sweeter.
BIDFest literally was 48 hours of brainstorming, ideating and designing. If you wish to challenge yourself against like minded individuals, BIDFest is the place to be!
Super fun event and a great learning experience. Cannot wait for BIDFest 2024!!
