About BIDE 2020

Virtual international conference on bioinspired design and engineering, BIDE 2020, organized by the School of Biosciences and Technology (SBST), VIT, Vellore in association with the Society for Biological Engineering (SBE-VIT). Biomimicry and bioinspired design field is very vast. In BIDE 2020 we are narrowing our window on cutting edge research work ongoing in the field. The conference brings in national and international personalities from academia, national laboratories, industries and organizations and are actively working in the field of bioinspired design, biomimetic engineering and biomimicry. The conference will be in a webinar-like format, whereby the speakers as well as the participants will join and interact in every session through web-based platforms from their respective homes or offices. All invited talks, special lectures by experts and e-poster presentations by participants will occur electronically through the web. Although virtually, BIDE 2020 provide will provide a unique opportunity to understand and develop new concepts of cutting edge bioinspired design.

  • Who can attend?
  • Researchers, students, engineers and corporate professionals from any field can register for the conference. There is no registration fee. Once registered, the participants will be provide with an access code through which they can attend all the sessions of the virtual conference. They can interact with the speakers in a dedicated session after his or her talk.

  • How to submit e-poster?
  • This is for participants. Participants have to make their eposters (i.e. an image file) in a portrait page setup with an aspect ratio of 3:4 and not less than 600 dpi. The participants have to post the e-poster in Linkedin with the following hashtags in the description of your post.

    Even if the participants may come in a group they should not resort to put the same e-poster from each of their respective account. Instead, a single participant can put the e-poster in LinkedIn and can tag rest of the group members in the post description.

Centre for Bioinspired Innovations and Designs (CBID) is newly initiated research and innovation centre incubated under SBST. Its sole moto is to encourage engineers and innovators for biomimetic learnings and innovations, and provide them a platform to do so. VIT believes that future engineering solutions are going to have a high biomimetic quotient. Hence, our engineers and innovators should be ready for it. The centre has recognized highly motivated faculty members and students on campus, from many disciplines, and started nurturing. Faculty members associated with the centre has dual role of research and teaching. The centre has also initiated networking with various biomimicry and bioinspired design centers, organization and labs across the globe. BIDE 2020 is the result of the said endeavor. The conference, BIDE 2020, will be the first of its kind and first official event of the centre.

Since last five years, VIT is actively spreading bioinspired design thinking and awareness among students through the School of Bioscience and Technology (SBST). SBST has start regular and online classes on bioinspired design. It has supported many techno-innovation fests focused on bioinspired design. SBST also harbors a state of the art bioinspired design lab that is operational since last two years. At present, the lab is mainly focused on biomimetic materials and fabrications. Other than bioinspired design, SBST offers undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral courses in the fields of Biotechnology, Biomedical Genetics, Applied Microbiology and Bioinformatics. The School consists of 4 departments: Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, Bio Sciences and Integrative Biology headed by experienced professors. Our efforts are strengthened by collaboration with national and international institutes and multinational companies, as well as with visiting scientists. Healthy interaction with academia and biotech industry is consistently promoted in the school. The school houses excellent infrastructure and well-trained faculty members which makes it to be one among the largest population of trained biologists in our country. The school is equipped with cutting edge technologies and instruments like SEM, HPLC, FPLC, qRT-PCR, various bioinformatics tools and softwares.

VIT has introduced many innovations in academic processes which adds value to every student. FFCS (Fully Flexible Credit System), PBL (Project Based Learning) for better learning, fully digitized academic portals that assist students in equipping themselves for 2020 market place. Hack-a-thons/Make-a-thons are a part of the curriculum exercise which kindle the interest and curiosity of the students molding them to be better problem solvers. The 8th module in every subject is being handled by industry experts, making the students contextualize the concepts they study in the classroom, are a few of the innovations VIT has introduced.

The Society for Biological Engineering of VIT Vellore (SBE-VIT) is an eminent Biotechnology-based student chapter that aims to bring together like-minded passionate people in the field of Biotechnology. Previously functioning under AIChe, SBE crossed its first milestone when it was established as a separate student chapter in 2018. Since then SBE-VIT has conducted various events on the university level, attracting internal and external students alike, from varied branches of study. SBE aims to hold more such conferences, seminars and events to promote common interests and encourage young intellectuals to create a mark among the budding and growing scientific communities.
