Description of Instructional Units used in Teaching
i) Fruit Orchard and Mini Orchard
Fruit orchard is established in an area of 10 acres according to the local soil and climatic
conditions. It has totally 20 different fruit crops such as sapota, west Indian cherry, star
gooseberry, bael, pomegranate, guava, ber, fig, annona, amla, wood apple, manila tamarind, star
fruit, tamarind, date palm. The mini orchard was established in VIT campus premises to carryout
different experiments as part of the horticultural curriculum. Totally 33 fruit crops were
assembled in an area of 3.0 acres at mini orchard. VIT Agri Farm is also having a senile mango
orchard (15 acres) to demonstrate the rejuvenation pruning and different methods of grafting to
the students and farmers.
ii) Agro Meteorological Observatory
The observatory is located in the Northeastern zone of Tamil Nadu at 12°57'57.8''N latitude and
79°11'07.3''E longitude with an altitude of 194 m above MSL. Institute has both manual
(Principal Observatory) as well automatic weather stations, where physical elements (daily
temperature, rainfall, sunshine, humidity, wind velocity, soil temperature, evaporation, etc.) and
