BEST PRACTICES - 2019-2020

Objectives of the Practice What are the objectives / intended outcomes of this “best
practice” and what are the underlying principles or concepts of this practice (in about 100

               words):

An initiative called Raman Research Award to recognize the research scholars, UG and PG

students for their quality publications, besides the regular research awards for the faculty
members, has resulted in enhancing the research profile of the institute as a whole. Under

this scheme, the scholar is rewarded with Rs.10,000 per publication with an impact factor
and Rs. 6,000 per publication with no impact factor. It is envisioned that this monetary

benefit will turn out to be a big boost in their quest towards publishing in quality journals.

The Context What were the contextual features or challenging issues that needed to be
addressed in designing and implementing this practice (in about 150 words):

This involves periodically collecting the details of the publications made by the scholar every

month. The collected data have to be checked for its suitability for the consideration of this
award. The primary criteria are that the scholar has to be the first author and the guide has

to be corresponding author. It will also be ascertained that the journal in which the paper is
published is not of predatory type.

The Practice Describe the practice and its uniqueness in the context of India higher
education. What were the constraints / limitations, if any, faced (in about 400 words):

Under this scheme called Raman Research Award, each and every scholar will get a reward

of Rs.10000 per publication. Multiple publications by a scholar could fetch him/her monetary
benefit up to Rs.30,000/-. Besides, VIT does recognize the scholars who publish ‘Review’

papers as they reach out to the intended audience more easily, resulting in more visibility and

citation. Hence, a scholar publishing a review article gets an extra of Rs.3000 per
publication. To the best of our knowledge, this practice of recognizing the scholars with a

good research attitude is very unique. Notwithstanding the fact that this scheme does involve
a significant financial commitment from Management, the intention has been mainly to

identify the active research scholars and provide necessary impetus to reach to higher
