About VIT

Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) was founded as Vellore Engineering College in 1984 by the Chancellor Dr. G. Vishwanathan. VIT was awarded 1st position among private institutions in India for Innovation (ARIIA 2019 Award) by Govt. of India, as recognition for its excellence in nurturing research innovations and entrepreneurship in young minds. VIT, known for its academic excellence, attracts students from all the 29 states of India and more than 41 different countries. Currently, VIT has 4 campuses – in Vellore, Chennai, Amaravati (AP) and Bhopal (MP).

VIT achieved 18th position among the engineering institutions in India by NIRF 2019, Govt. of India. VIT received 4 STAR rating in QS ranking, making it, the first institution in India to have this credential. In addition to this, the consortium of industries, FICCI conferred VIT with the “Excellence in Faculty” award. VIT was ranked number one ahead of other premier Indian universities for its maximum number of publications in SCOPUS Indexed Research Journals for the year 2019. VIT has consistently received “A” grade in the past three cycles of NAAC accreditation. In addition, VIT also has received the coveted ABET accreditation, which is widely recognized throughout the world. VIT, which is consistently placed among the best institutions of the country, aspires to become one of the best universities in the world.

VIT, known for its innovative curriculum and pedagogy has many student-friendly learning systems. Some of the few salient features include: FFCS (Fully Flexible Credit System) and PBL (Project Based Learning) which give positive and effective learning outcomes. Fully digitized academic portals that assist students in equipping themselves for 2020 market place. Programs like Hack-a-thon, Make-a-thon are organized as part of curriculum exercise that kindles the interest and the curiosity of students, and motivates them to be better problem solvers. Moreover, another unique thing in VIT is that the last module in every subject is being handled by industrial experts, making the students contextualize the concepts they study in the classroom. www.vit.ac.in

About CBCMT

Centre for Biomaterials, Cellular and Molecular Theranostics (CBCMT) was established in the year 2016 under the able leadership of Prof. Geetha Manivasagam and is an integral part of VIT. This interdisciplinary research center works on cutting edge science at the interface of physical, biological, chemical and engineering sciences. The research team comprise of material scientists, metallurgists, physicists, electrical engineers, bioengineers, chemists, biologists and clinicians, who work together to address the unmet needs in the areas of biomaterials, cellular and molecular theranostics. Some of the key focus areas include bone tissue engineering, biocorrosion and biomechanics, cardiac tissue engineering, corneal tissue regeneration, drug discovery and delivery, quantum dots for theranostics, sensors for microbial detection, implant health monitoring and stem cell delivery. CBCMT is equipped with high-end instruments to carry out experiments ranging from material synthesis, material processing, characterizations as well as advanced tissue culture facilities. The recent addition to this center, HOME (Human Organ Manufacturing and Engineering) Lab is an advanced 3D bioprinting facility equipped with two high-end Cellink BioX bioprinters as well as few basic bioprinters. With this addition, center is better positioned to fabricate 3D organoids and tissue mimics, which will be also be one of the key focus areas in coming years. It is equipped with high end characterization instruments such as confocal microscope, cell culture lab, qPCr, Tribocorrosion tester, fretting wear tester, scratch tester, environmental controlled furnaces, alloy coatings, plasma treatment setup and electrophoretic deposition unit. The ongoing projects of the center are funded by both national and international funding agencies. The center also has a strong research collaboration with scientists from leading research laboratories within India as well as across the globe.
