World Environment Day is an annual global event held on June 5th since 1973, aiming to raise awareness and drive action for the protection of our environment. With participation from over 143 countries each year, World Environment Day serves as a significant platform for public outreach, uniting businesses, non-governmental organizations, communities, governments, and celebrities in advocating for environmental causes. The theme for World Environment Day 2024 is ‘land restoration, desertification and drought resilience’, 'emphasizing the need of land restoration to reverse the creeping tide of land degradation, drought and desertification. According to UNEP Chief, restoration boosts livelihoods, lowers poverty and builds resilience to extreme weather. Restoration increases carbon storage, slows climate change, could avoid up to 60 per cent of expected species extinctions.
