School of Chemical Engineering (SCHEME)

Dean's Message

Welcome to the School of Chemical Engineering, VIT Vellore.

Since the inception in 1994, the School of Chemical Engineering has gained its capacity incrementally, first to ensure that all academic programmes were offered professionally and to ensure that the graduates produced were of the highest quality and much sought by the industry and employers. Our B.Tech Programme is based on FFCS (Fully Flexible Credit System), providing maximum choice to the students when it comes to choosing their career path and encouraging active learning. The B.Tech program is for a total of 4 years and 160 credits, which are earned throughout the entire 4 year period.

The school has state-of-the art infrastructural facilities for training the students. The students are trained by highly qualified, experienced and dedicated faculty. We stress on the importance of the latest relevant softwares and to ensure that the students are given practical hands on training on the latest software used by industries such as ASPEN PLUS, HYSYS, MATLAB, and SOLID WORKS. Our school strives to maintain strong links with industry through interactions spanning consultancy, sponsored research and continuing education. The school also supports cutting edge research in diverse areas such as fluidization, membrane separation, waste management and cleaner production, modelling and simulation of chemical processes.

Overcoming the inception period satisfactorily, the school has gathered strength in the research and development arena and was able to be a respectable school in terms of research carried out and research output produced. The second half of this decade of this century has witnessed the school with publications in high impact factor ISI peer reviewed international journals.

The school has three Student Chapters namely, American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) and Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE). At VIT, the student chapter encourages the professional development of students through various seminars and workshops. The AIChE chapter has been awarded as the outstanding student chapter by AIChE for 2015-16 and 2016-17. Similarly, the SPE chapter was awarded as the best outstanding student chapter in the year 2017.

Because of this well designed and unique approach the students are fully equipped to take responsibilities in the Chemical Industry such as Oil & Gas Sector, Petrochemicals, Fertilizers, Pharmaceuticals, Agrochemicals, Specialty Chemicals, Polymers, food, Paints, Textile, Ceramics, Paper & Pulp, Design and Construction, Business services, amongst others.

I take this opportunity to thank all the members in the school who have worked hard to position the school where we are now. We need to go to the next level. I invite everyone to work together towards helping humanity achieve all the noble aspirations that all of us can achieve together. I hope that the School of Chemical Engineering of VIT will have a significant role in such endeavour.
