It is my pleasure welcoming you all to School of Electrical Engineering through web connect. It is also my first opportunity as School Head to share with you the exciting news and accomplishments that distinguish the department as a whole and its faculty, students and staff. Currently, our School has 101 faculty members, 1250+ undergraduates and Post students, and 200+ PhD students. Our faculty, students and staff have been recognized with many significant awards from Professional Societies.
I would like to acknowledge the inputs to the strategic plan and various other departmental initiatives from the Advisory Group in School of Electrical Engineering. Their inputs have been extremely valuable as we set the vision for School of Electrical Engineering. As the School moves forward, we plan to build new opportunities for undergraduate students in SELECT through advanced research and teaching programs leading to publication possibilities and exposure to entrepreneurship, expanded access to hands-on facilities, expanded interactions with industry and alumni, and curriculum (e.g., focus on Smart Grid and Virtual Labs). We also want to ensure continued excellence in our graduate programmes, building greater opportunities for our graduate students to explore the cross-disciplinary wealth of research in our affiliated laboratories and research areas in School of Electrical Engineering, and in related disciplines across VIT. A number of inter-disciplinary centers have been created in our affiliated labs, including the JCI Building automation lab and the TBI-BIRAC BioNEST health care product development Lab.
Our international collaborations in partners Universities have been extremely beneficial to our students and faculty. Our Industry partnership with Danfoss, Schneider Electric, JCI, were extremely helpful for our students and faculty to abreast their knowledge in their domains. Graduates from the School of Electrical Engineering were over 6,000. Our alumni are innovative leaders in fields impacting people across the globe. Each year we feature several Course 6 alumni in the VIT SELECT Connector, the annual VIT newsletter and include them in this Alumni spotlight. Moving forward, we hope to scale up this effort, creating a virtual environment that allows our alumni to share their experience with our students. For example, SELECT alums Avinash Srinivasan, Abhinav and Anushkha Singh generously gave lectures this year to our students, on charting a successful path from VIT to impacting society. Support like this from our alumni will be critical in building the next generation of engineers. I am eager to hear your thoughts on how we can engage our alumni further in our department.
We are proud that our faculty, students and alumni are driving the next generation of technology and making a broad societal impact. With the upcoming launch of our new website, we look forward to strengthening your connection to VIT and School of Electrical Engineering.
