VIT Students write semester exam on special tablet

Answers will be stored on the cloud, teachers will get them on their laptops

In about three years, students of VIT University might get to write their examinations not on paper but custom-made “exam tablets”. The university is testing out this digital venture keeping the future in the mind.
The university’s Vice Chancellor Anand A. Samuel, while speaking at the National Science Day celebrations on Monday, said the students had written their semester exam on special tablets. Once submitted, their answers will be stored on the Cloud. Faculty members would get the answers fr?om the Cloud onto their laptops and evaluate using digital pens.

Elaborating on this initiative, he later said, “In 2014, we tested this with a batch of 60 students of VIT, Vellore and it worked well. As the Vellore campus has a huge number of first year students of around 3,000, we took this to VIT, Chennai campus. A total of 860 first year students at Chennai campus have written the last two semester examinations on these tablets.”

Using the IP address, the teachers would be able to access the answers from the Cloud.
“Laptops have been given to teachers. A digital pen and digital pad is provided for evaluation. Marks too will be stored on the Cloud,” he explained.

This exam tablet was manufactured by Chennai-based Little more Innovation Private Limited, he said.
“We are looking at expanding this tablet-based exam in a phased manner within three years. The world is moving ahead and we need to keep in tune,” he added.
