The School of Mechanical Engineering at VIT is one of the renowned schools in the country and has been operational since 1984. The school features a team of exceptionally qualified faculty members, many with PhDs from elite universities of India and abroad, who educate and train the greatest brains in the country. The school is proud of the major research support it has received from various government agencies, including DST, DRDO, MNRE, CSIR, CVRDE, CPDO, MOES, AR&DB, CVRDE, ISRO, UGC, NRB, and AICTE, as well as international agencies from the Royal Academy of Engineering, UK, and the British Council UK etc. The school has signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with world-class universities and reputed industry leaders that ensure our students advance in their careers.
The Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India acknowledged the school's research activities and provided funding under the FIST scheme in 2003, 2010, and 2022. The School has also received a major grant of Rs. 20 crores from the Department of Science and Technology for the establishment of a "Centre of Excellence in Additive Manufacturing" under the PURSE Scheme. The school actively helps local industries in various fields by offering executive training programs on product design, additive manufacturing, and computational fluid dynamics.
The school offers sophisticated and modern facilities on par with the elite institutions that enable advanced research in a wide range of technological areas. The curriculum and the courses have been developed jointly with the industry partners. The courses provided are specifically designed to meet the requirements of the Aerospace, Automotive, Defence, Energy, and Manufacturing sectors. As a result, the students have been able to pursue advanced education at prestigious universities in both India and other countries. It is with great pleasure to inform you that three of the Bachelor's Degree Programmes B. Tech. Mechanical Engineering, B.Tech. Mechanical with Specialisation in Automotive Engineering and B.Tech. Mechanical with Specialisation in Energy Engineering offered by the School was accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.
Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering are ranked in the top 8-10 in India and top 201-250 worldwide as per QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024. In Engineering and Technology "Mechanical Engineering" Specialisations are ranked within the top 501-600 in the world as per THE World University Ranking by Subject 2024.
