Research

Funded Projects And Consultancy

The school is the proud recipient of two FIST projects of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The first project was granted for the development of the Automotive Research Centre in the year 2003 with an outlay of Rs. 0.57 cr. The second project was granted for the establishment of the Centre for Advanced Manufacturing Research in 2011 with a total outlay of Rs. 2.57 cr. The school takes up funded research projects in the broad areas of Additive Manufacturing, Alternative Fuels, Bio-Corrosion, Composite Materials, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Technology, Hydrogen Storage, IC Engine, MEMS, Metal Joining, Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) and Surface Engineering.

The school has received a total of 57 research projects with a total outlay of 15.64 crores in the last 5 years from 2018. The funding is being provided by various agencies such as DST – SERB, DST-CRG, AR&DB, ISRO, DAE–BRNS, DRDO-NRB, GTRE, and DST-Nano-Mission scheme etc.. The school has also attracted international funding from Royal Academy of Engineering, Swedish Council for higher education, DST-NAWA, DST-IC IMPACT Indo- Canada, Indo-Hungarian Joint Research Scheme, DST – UKIERI etc. in the last 5 years.

Publications

The school has a very competitive and healthy publishing culture. The number of Scopus indexed publications of the faculty members of the school in the year 2017 is 315. The published journals include wear measurement, International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, Fuel, Renewable energy, Progress in Materials Science, Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, Materials and Design, Enzyme and Microbial Technology, Ceramics International, Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, Heat and Mass Transfer, Composite Structures and Corrosion Engineering and Technology.

 One of the areas of focus of the School is on New Product Development and the generation of intellectual wealth. The faculty members of the school had filed over 12 National parents over the last 5 years. The list of patents filed include Eco Board, Rotating radiator for improved heat transfer in motor vehicles, Special Anode for Aluminium – Air batteries, Anodic Coating for Aluminium – Air batteries and Mobile Vehicle Garage.

Dr. Renold Elsen, Associate Professor, SMEC has successfully participated in and completed the Altair Optimisation Contest (AOC) India, 2022 in the category "Industrial Design (Mech/Civil/Aero/Auto). Secured the "First" in this domain and received the Certificate of Commendation.

Dr. S. Saboor, Assistant Professor, SMEC has been selected for the "BRICS Young Scientist"  from BRICS Forum 2022 by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), New Delhi to harness knowledge for solving common societal challenges through research and innovation.

Dr. Sakthivadivel, Assistant Professor, SMEC has been awarded the ISTE-SGSITS National Award for Young Teachers (below 35 years) of Engineering Colleges instituted by Shri G.S. Institute of Technology and Science, Indore for the year 2022 by the Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE), New Delhi. He received the award from the Chief Minister of Goa during ISTE Annual National Faculty Convention held on August 27, 2022

BRICS Young Scientist Forum - National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) & Department of Science & Technology (DST) jointly organizing BRICS Young Scientist Conclave. The conclave is happening every year in various BRICS countries. Dr. K. Balaji selected to participate in the 6th BRICS Young Scientist Conclave and Delivered a talk on “Pathway to sustainable cooling and heating” held on 13-16 September 2021.

Dr. Padmanabhan and Dr. M. Sharan Chandran published a book entitled “Self-Reinforced Polymer Composite” Publisher: The Science, Engineering and Technology, De Gruyter.

Dr. Seshu Sattiraju, Director, Thin films and Diffusion, Non- Volatile Memory Technology development, Intel Corporation, Portland, USA was the resource person.

Dr. M. Nageswara Rao Dr. M. Nageswara Rao was awarded in recognition of the R&D work in the area of Forging during the International Forging Congress (IFC) held at Hyderabad.

Dr. C. D. Naiju Dr. C. D. Naiju has been awarded the “Outstanding SAE Faculty Advisor Award” under SAE Outstanding Faculty Advisors Program for Student Branch and Collegiate Design Series Team Advisors from SAE International World Congress Experience 2017- WCX17 by SAE International President Douglas Patton at Cobo Convention Centre in Detroit, Michigan, USA.

Dr. M. Murugan Dr. M. Murugan was awarded the “SAE India Southern Section Outstanding Faculty of the year 2019” in appreciation of his leadership and extraordinary contributions.

Dr. K. Jayakrishna  Dr. K. Jayakrishna was awarded “IEI Young Engineers Award 2019-2020” in Production Engineering discipline. The award was presented during the Inaugural session of the 34th National Convention of Production Engineers held at NIT Trichy

Dr. Boopathi  Dr. Boopathi M and Dr. Ashok B were awarded the “DST-TEXAS Instruments Award” in appreciation for fostering an ecosystem bridging the Government, Industry and Acadmia in the India Innovation Challenge Design Contest 2018
