Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Vellore was established in 1984 as Vellore Engineering College, with 180 students and 3 programs. Today it has evolved in to a deemed to be University with over 40,000 students offering 46 Undergraduate and 48 Postgraduate programs and having 19 schools in two campuses.
VIT is focussed on providing quality education and is engaged in transformative research. It offers bachelors, masters and doctoral level programs in diverse areas including Science, Engineering, Humanises, Life Science, Agriculture, Law, Fashion Technology, Architecture, Hotel & Tourism, Design and Management. VIT has established 19 research centres, 13 in Vellore and 11 in Chennai, in almost all frontier areas including Automotive, Functional Materials, NanoBiotechnology, Green Technologies, Biomaterials, Clean Environment, Innovative Manufacturing, Nanotechnology, Bio Separation Technology, Disaster Mitigation & Management, Artificial Intelligence, VIT – Semiconductor Research, e-Automation, Electric Vehicles, Cyber Physical Systems, Data Science, Climate Change, Human Movement Analytics, VLSI Design, Healthcare Technologies, Smart Grid and Neuroinformatics.

The Directorate of Ranking and Accreditation (RAAC) at Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) is committed to enhancing the university’s reputation. VIT has grown as a leading Educational Institution in India. National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has accredited VIT Vellore with CGPA of 3.66 on four-point scale at A++ grade. National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), Government of India, has ranked VIT Vellore among the Top 20 Universities in the country consecutively since 2016. In NIRF 2025 VIT ranked 14 University category, at 14 under Research, 16 under Engineering and at 21 in the Overall category.


VIT has further strengthened its global academic standing in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, with several disciplines achieving impressive international rankings. In the broad subject area of Engineering & Technology, VIT is ranked 119th globally, reaffirming its position among the world’s leading engineering institutions.

The University has demonstrated exceptional performance across key engineering and technology disciplines, ranking 86th globally in Computer Science & Information Systems, 87th in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, 137th in Materials Science, 148th in Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering, and within the 101–200 band for Data Science & Artificial Intelligence. It is also ranked in the 201–250 band for Chemical Engineering and 201–275 for Civil & Structural Engineering.

Beyond engineering, VIT has earned strong global recognition across the natural sciences. The University is ranked 303rd in the broad subject area of Natural Sciences, with notable subject rankings of 104th in Mathematics, 251–300 in Chemistry and Physics & Astronomy, and 351–400 in Environmental Sciences.

In the Life Sciences & Medicine broad subject area, VIT is placed in the 501–550 band globally. Its subject-specific achievements include rankings of 301–350 in Biological Sciences, 401–475 in Agriculture & Forestry, and 551–600 in Medicine.
VIT has also established a growing presence in the social sciences and creative disciplines. The University is ranked in the 451–500 band for Business & Management Studies, 251–275 for Statistics & Operational Research, and 201–300 for Arts & Design.


These rankings underscore VIT’s sustained commitment to academic excellence, impactful research, and interdisciplinary innovation across a diverse range of subject areas, reinforcing its reputation as a globally recognized institution of higher education. VIT is ranked 691st globally in the QS World University Rankings 2027. VIT achieved a significant milestone in the Shanghai Ranking (ARWU) 2025 by securing in the 501–600 global rank band and attaining the 1–2 rank band among Indian institutions. It shows our excellence in research and global academic standing.
As a testament to its unwavering commitment to sustainability and environmentally responsible practices, Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) has secured a distinguished position in the QS Sustainability Rankings 2026, securing 352nd place globally and 7th among higher educational institutions in India.
