Divestment Policy

Due to rising power consumption and increasing costs for electricity and Diesel Generator (DG) bills, the University seeks to reduce its dependence on the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) and DG sets. This policy outlines steps toward becoming self-reliant in power needs by investing in renewable energy sources, as encouraged by the Indian government.

Objective and Scope

The goal is to achieve self-reliance in energy by investing in solar, wind, and biomass energy solutions.

Policy Framework

Solar Power: Aim for 20% annual growth in solar capacity and install thermal solar heaters in all new hostels and quarters.

Wind Power: Increase wind power capacity by 100% every 3 years and establish a micro wind plant on campus for experimentation.

Biomass: Implement a campus waste-to-biomass power system by 2025, aiming for zero solid waste disposal

Electrification of Vehicles: Transition all university vehicles, including buses and cars, to battery-operated by 2025.

The Special Officer, Estates will oversee the implementation of the policy and report progress to the Vice Chancellor periodically. The policy follows the guidelines issued in 2016,2019 and 2021, which continue to apply for the 2022-2023 academic year. This policy lays out a comprehensive strategy to reduce the University’s reliance on non-renewable energy sources and move toward sustainability through the adoption of solar, wind, biomass, and electric vehicles.
