Earthquake Disaster Mock Drill Jointly Organised by District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Government of Tamil Nadu and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Government of India, in association with Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) Vellore, India, 4th March 2023- Coordinated By Dr. G.P.Ganapathy, VIT, Vellore
An Earthquake Disaster Mock Drill is a simulated disaster exercise that assesses the readiness and response skills of individuals, communities, and organizations in the event of an earthquake. The drill consists of coordinated measures like as evacuation, search and rescue, first aid, and the usage of emergency shelters. Participants, including municipal officials, emergency services, and civilians, adhere to prescribed processes to enable a timely and successful reaction in the event of an earthquake. These drills are designed to detect weaknesses in disaster response, enhance communication, and promote knowledge about safety precautions including “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” during shaking and proper evacuation routes. Communities can increase their earthquake resilience and lower the danger of casualties and damage by practicing mock drills. VIT conducts these types of events on regular basis and supports the local and regional government.

VIT performs Table Top Exercise (TTX) for earthquake disasters which are a simulation in which emergency responders, government officials, and stakeholders discuss and collaborate on a hypothetical earthquake scenario. The exercise tests disaster response planning, coordination, and decision-making. Participants take on their individual roles and solve problems such as infrastructure collapse, resource shortages, and aftershocks. The activity is led by a facilitator who presents evolving difficulties to encourage group participation. A debriefing session is then held to identify disaster preparedness strengths, flaws, and areas for development. The TTX facilitates cooperation, improves reaction methods, and identifies gaps in preparation and resources.
In order to assist the government, Vellore Institute of Technology issued a preliminary report on seismic disturbances and recent earthquakes felt in the districts of Erode, Tiruppur, and Dindigul that required a thorough examination of the underlying reasons and the start of ongoing monitoring. On March 22, 2023, Dr. G.P. Ganapathy, VIT, submitted the study to the Dindigul District Collector, Tamilnadu. The regional government was assisted to be alert in the event of earthquakes and seismic disturbances by this exercise, which was carried out by Vellore Institute of Technology.
