  • EQUATING METHODOLOGY

  • Equating is a statistical process that is used to adjust scores on test forms (that are approximately equivalent) so that scores on the forms can be used interchangeably. Thus, equating is used to adjust scores of candidates who have taken different forms of a test, in order to facilitate meaningful and fair comparison for merit list and ranking of these candidates. The statistical procedure of Equipercentile Equating would be used by VIT to identify the percentile ranks for candidates, such that scores on different forms with the same percentile rank are considered to be equivalent. Thus, Percentile Rank is a unique and invariant position of the test taker in that group. A percentile Rank, say 90 Percentile Rank denotes that there are 90 percent of test takers scores below this score level and 10 percent above this test score. Candidates are advised not to make assumptions and predictions of their score or rank based on their own estimates of raw scores

NLC-VIT success with bottom ash building: 'Times of India'
NLC-VIT success with bottom ash building: 'Times of India'

CUDDALORE: Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) and Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) constructed an experimental building using mostly bottom ash, instead of sand.

The building at the pre-casting yard on the NLC premises was constructed in a 920-square-foot site at a cost of approximately 15 lakh. NLC chairman and managing director B Surender Mohan inaugurated the building on Wednesday.

Bottom ash has been used in preparation of pre-cast solid blocks, completely replacing river sand while 50% of sand and 50% bottom ash were used in concrete. The basement was filled only with bottom ash. NLC reduced the cost of construction by 10% as it saved 2,650 cubic feet of river sand.

Bottom ash and fly ash are collected at the bottom of the boilers in the thermal power plants. Fly ash is used in brick industries and cement factories. Bottom ash have heavier course material.

The NLC, which decided to utilize the bottom ash in construction activities as a substitute of sand, entered into a memorandum of understanding with the VIT University to undertake a detailed research in 2010. The joint research at a cost of Rs 45.46 lakh yielded positive results, proving that bottom ash can completely replace sand in cement mortar and cement blocks.

The research also proved that using 50% bottom ash and 50% sand would enhance the quality of the concrete. The blocks made using the bottom ash have good compressive strength and less water absorbing capacity when compared to blocks made using sand.

The research team comprised Centre for Applied Research and Development general manager S Santhanam and Central Technical Office general manager (civil) R Ramakrishnan, and VIT professors A S Santhi and G Mohan Ganesh.
