Exploring the Reproductive System: Hormonal Effects on Physiology and Behaviour

The School of Healthcare Science and Engineering recently hosted a highly engaging lecture titled Exploring the Reproductive System: Hormonal Effects on Physiology and Behaviour, presented by Dr. Hemavathy Ramalingam, MD (Physiology). With over a decade of experience both as a medical practitioner and educator, Dr. Hemavathy serves as a Senior Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiology, at the Govt. Hospital, Adukamparai, Vellore bringing a wealth of knowledge and clinical insight to the session.

Dr. Hemavathy’s lecture delved into the complex interplay between hormones and the human reproductive system, emphasizing how hormonal fluctuations can significantly influence physiology and behavior. Attendees were guided through the fundamental mechanisms of endocrine regulation, with detailed explanations of how hormonal imbalances can affect reproductive functions and, consequently, impact overall health. The lecture was enriched by real-world examples and analogies that helped bridge the gap between basic research and clinical practice.

The interactive session encouraged students to actively participate, posing thoughtful questions and engaging in discussions about topics such as feedback loops, endocrine disruptions, and the clinical implications of hormonal variations. In addition to the core lecture content, Dr. Hemavathy shared insights from her own research on obesity and biomarkers in young adults, providing a multidimensional perspective that linked her academic work with practical, observable outcomes in patient care.

The lecture concluded with a dynamic question-and-answer segment, ensuring that all participants left with a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the pivotal role hormones play in modulating both physiology and behaviour.
