En Kural 2026: Learning Radio by Doing Radio

Community radio is best understood through participation and that was the idea behind En Kural 2026, a five-day Community Radio Workshop organised by VIT Community Radio 90.8 from 18th to 22th May 2026 at the Silver Jubilee Tower, VIT, Vellore. Bringing together school students, college students, aspiring radio jockeys and community members aged 12 to 60; the workshop transformed a working radio station into an interactive learning space where participants experienced every stage of radio production.

The workshop aimed to develop participants’ communication, public speaking, storytelling, voice modulation, script writing, podcasting, and radio production skills through practical learning. Participants explored studio operations, programme formats, recording techniques, audience engagement, and live broadcasting. The sessions were led by Dr. S. Saleema Rabiyath, Assistant Professor and Head, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Madurai Kamaraj University, and a radio professional with over 25 years of broadcasting experience, who was invited by VIT Community Radio as the workshop resource person.

Each day combined expert-led sessions with hands-on activities. Participants toured the radio station, learnt script writing and storytelling, and worked in teams to produce programmes in various formats, including Outdoor Broadcasting, Group Discussion, Radio Magazine and Radio Drama. They also received training in voice delivery, microphone handling, pronunciation and studio etiquette. A defining highlight of the workshop was the opportunity for every participant to go live on-air, enabling them to apply their classroom learning in a real broadcasting environment while building confidence and communication skills. The workshop concluded with storytelling activities, a quiz, participant feedback and the distribution of certificates and souvenirs.

The learning extended beyond the workshop through participant-produced radio programmes broadcast on VIT Community Radio 90.8. These included a Karuthukalam vox pop on coping with summer, Karasaram – Andrum Indrum discussing societal changes, the environmental radio drama Marathadi Memories, a debate on Junk Food vs Healthy Food, and a radio feature – Life Inside a Scroll, which explored the impact of social media along with expert insights from Dr. Senthil Kumar.

The workshop was coordinated by the VIT Community Radio Students’ Club, with RJ Nithish Vaibhav leading programme production, RJ Akshaya Natarajan and RJ Sriganth managing registrations and RJ Daniel documenting the event. They were supported by 25 volunteers, whose contributions from pre-event planning to post-event activities ensured the successful execution of En Kural 2026.

Under the guidance of Dr. R. Subashini, Director i/c, VIT Community Radio, the workshop was successfully conducted by the Community Radio team, comprising Mr. Koothaperumal Anand, Assistant Manager, Mr. R. Saravana Karthick, Programme Assistant and Mr. P. Palani, Senior Technician. At the valedictory ceremony, Dr. R. Subashini presented certificates and souvenirs to the participants. She also encouraged them to continue producing radio programmes through VIT Community Radio 90.8 to disseminate essential information and contribute to community development.

By combining expert mentorship with immersive studio practice, En Kural 2026 successfully demonstrated that the best way to learn radio is by doing radio. The workshop strengthened communication skills, encouraged creativity and teamwork and reinforced the role of VIT Community Radio 90.8 as a platform for media education, community participation, and lifelong learning.
