The Master of Social Work (MSW) programme at Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) is a four-semester field and research-intensive postgraduate program that intends to build skilled human resources in professional social work. What is the duration of the MSW programme at VIT?

The Master of Social Work (MSW) at VIT is a two-year, four-semester postgraduate programme offered at the Vellore campus.

Is there an entrance exam for MSW admission at VIT?

No. Admission is based on academic merit in the qualifying degree, combined with a Group Discussion and Personal Interview. There is no national entrance examination such as VITMEE for this programme.

What is the eligibility criteria for MSW at VIT?

Any graduation degree of at least three years’ duration with a minimum of 60% marks, inclusive of all subjects, from a recognised university or institution. Correspondence or Open University degrees are not eligible.

Is there a relaxation in eligibility marks?

Yes. A 10% relaxation applies to SC/ST candidates and to applicants from Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and the North Eastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.

What specialisations are offered in the MSW programme?

Three professional elective tracks: Medical and Psychiatric Social Work, Community Development, and Human Resource Management. Students select one track in the later semesters.

Which campus offers the MSW programme?

The MSW programme is currently offered only at the VIT Vellore campus, not at VIT Chennai.

What is the total fee for the MSW programme?

The published fee at the Vellore campus is Rs. 60,000, plus a refundable Caution Deposit of Rs. 2,000 for the first year and a non-refundable online application fee of Rs. 600.

How many credits does the MSW programme carry?

The curriculum carries a Total Graded Credit Requirement of 80 credits: 32 University Core, 33 Professional Core and 15 Professional Elective credits.

How much fieldwork is involved in the MSW programme?

Three fieldwork practicums across the four semesters, a one-month summer internship after the first year, and a final-semester internship paired with an original dissertation.

Is a dissertation mandatory for the MSW programme?

Yes. The final semester includes a combined Internship and Dissertation requiring Institutional Review Board ethical approval, original data collection and a final viva-voce.

What career options are available after completing MSW at VIT?

Roles such as Medical or Psychiatric Social Worker, Community Development Officer, HR and Labour Welfare Officer, NGO Programme Coordinator, School Social Worker and CSR Executive. These are potential directions and depend on specialisation and individual performance.

What is the application fee for MSW at VIT?

Rs. 600, payable through Netbanking, Debit Card, Credit Card or Paytm. This fee is non-refundable.

Are Group Discussion and Personal Interview both part of the selection process?

Yes. Eligibility criteria include performance in a Group Discussion and Face to Face Interview, and shortlisted candidates are called for a Personal Interview in order of merit.

What documents are required at the time of MSW admission?

Class X and XII certificates, qualifying degree mark sheets, a migration or transfer certificate where available, Community or Nativity Certificate where applicable, and an Aadhaar Card, plus further documents at reporting.
