Energy wastage identification

Yearly energy audit is conducted along with quarterly walk-through audit by the internal energy conservation team. Also, continuous monitoring and performance analyses of energy intensive equipment are done regularly to track energy saving features.

The internal energy conservation team conducts yearly energy audits as well as quarterly walk-through audits. Line losses are a major worry on campus, notably in two hostel-side power houses. The primary cause is distance, while the secondary one is that the cables are frequently overburdened. As a result, continuous monitoring and performance analysis of energy-intensive equipment are carried out on a regular basis to identify energy-saving features.

1. Currently, three of our hostel and administrative blocks have been replaced with centralised air conditioning units, which may save more than 30% of energy when compared to individual room tiny air conditioning units (1 and 1.5 tonnes).

2. The buildings’ air conditioners were replaced with energy-efficient VRF units. A 635 TR VRF system replaces comparable tonnage of window ACs, resulting in a 33% energy savings.

3. The installation of 440 TR of centralised water-cooled AC replaces 480 TR of window and split ACs, resulting in a 50% energy savings over traditional ACs.

4. 150 street lights are converted from 400 W sodium / metal halide lamps to 90 W LED. Ensure access to affordable, dependable, sustainable, and contemporary energy for all.

5. We have erected a 40 kWp off-grid solar system at our agricultural field, animal shelters, and fish pond. A total of 46 solar street lights are installed.

6. Six VIT agricultural open wells are connected to solar pumps for irrigation purposes.

7. We conducted an external energy audit at Malladi Drugs, analyzing energy use, HVAC and STP plants, and recommending energy-saving strategies.

8. During holidays, lab technicians should turn off the UPS to prevent losses.

Green Audit Recommendations:

The green audit assists in the process of monitoring and verifying the performance in the environmental arena and is fast becoming an indispensable aid to decision making in VIT. The green audit reports assist in the process of attaining an eco-friendly approach to the sustainable development of the University. Hope that the results presented in the green auditing report will serve as an opportunity to improving the environment related practices and resource usage at the university as well as new activities and innovative practices. A few recommendations are added to the waste management using eco- friendly and scientific techniques. This may lead to the prosperous future in context of Green Campus and thus sustainable environment and community development. It has been shown frequently that the practical suggestions, alternatives, and observations that have resulted from audits have added positive value to the audited organisation. An outside view, perspective and opinion often help staffs who have been too close to problems or methods to see the value of alternative approaches. A green audit report is a very powerful and valuable communications tool to use when working with various stakeholders who need to be convinced that things are running smoothly and systems and procedures are coping with natural changes and modifications that occur.
