Data Acquisition Lab
Overview
The Data Acquisition Lab is a teaching facility within the School of Electronics Engineering (SENSE) at VIT Vellore, providing students with practical learning and experimentation in data acquisition, measurement, signal processing, and system analysis. The lab is equipped with software tools such as Multisim, MATLAB, LabVIEW, and NETSIM, along with the data acquisition hardware, enabling students to simulate electronic circuits, acquire and process real-time data, develop measurement and monitoring applications, and analyse network communication scenarios.
Objectives
- To develop skills in electronic circuit design and simulation using Multisim.
- To introduce data analysis, signal processing, and system modelling using MATLAB.
- To provide practical knowledge of data acquisition, measurement, and instrumentation using LabVIEW and DAQ hardware.
- To develop skills in network simulation and communication analysis using NETSIM.
- To enable students to design, simulate, and analyse engineering systems using the available software tools and DAQ hardware.
Key Focus Areas
- Electronic circuit simulation and performance analysis using Multisim.
- Signal processing and system modelling using MATLAB
- Real-time data acquisition, visualization, and monitoring using LabVIEW and DAQ hardware.
- Measurement and instrumentation using sensors and data acquisition systems.
- Network simulation and communication analysis using NETSIM.
- Experimental validation and comparison of simulated and real-time system responses.
SOFTWARE FACILITIES
The laboratory provides access to advanced software tools, including:
- MATLAB – Numerical computation, signal processing, data analysis, and communication system evaluation
- LabVIEW – A powerful graphical programming environment used primarily by engineers and scientists for data acquisition, instrument control, test automation, and industrial diagnostics
- Multisim – An industry-standard SPICE(Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis) simulation and electronic circuit design software. It integrates schematic capture with interactive SPICE simulation, allowing engineers, researchers, and students to model, analyse, and test analog, digital, and power electronics circuits before building physical hardware
- Solid Works – an industry-leading, parametric feature-based 3D CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and CAE (Computer-Aided Engineering) software
