Established as a distinct entity in 2009, the School of Social Sciences and Languages (SSL) employs innovative teaching methods and adopts interdisciplinary approaches to learning. The School helps students gain knowledge and skills that are required in the global market. It adheres to the highest standards in teaching-learning by employing innovative practices, ensuring excellence in research, and by adopting rigorous internal peer and student review.
The School of Social Sciences and Languages constitutes department of Commerce, Social Sciences, English and other Languages. This was constituted as an individual school in 2009. It is one of the most acclaimed schools of social sciences in India. The prime focus of the school is on imparting futuristic and supportive education to engineering and non-engineering students in subjects like Commerce, Economics, English, Psychology, History, Music, Ethics and Values and Sociology. The school is also a great learning centre for Indian and foreign languages like Tamil, Hindi, English, French, German, Japanese, Italy, Spanish and Chinese.

VIT aims to produce professionals who have excellent communication skills in addition to cutting edge, state of the art technical abilities. The importance of English in this global world has strengthened the need to excel in the language. “Project Eloquence” was initiated in the beginning of the year 2019 by Department of English, School of Social Sciences and Languages to improve the language proficiency of the students. An objective English Proficiency Test (EPT) is conducted for the students to determine their proficiency levels. Based on the levels the students are taught courses that cater to their existing levels of language ability. The beneficial outcome of this would relate to the fact that students are given challenges and exercises that commensurate with their abilities. Staff members are also given training in English and communication skills. With a focus on clarity and adherence to global standards, “Project Eloquence” is expected to play a key role in taking VIT to the next rung among the universities of the world.
